In 1860, Bauhinia was first discovered in Hong Kong. Its flowers are large and bright, yet it is fruitless.
On October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was established and first raised Five-starred Red Flag.
In 1965, Hong Kong statutorily approved Bauhinia as the city flower symbolizing uniqueness and preciousness.
At the time of drafting Basic Law, the Chinese name of Bauhinia was modified by eliminating the word “yang”. “Yang”, means “foreign”.
On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong returned to China and officially used Bauhinia with stamped five stars on petals as basic design for the flag of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
