In Residual Sound, Tang Kwok-hin transforms ordinary household objects into instruments of memory and emotional resonance. Inspired by Philippine artist Mimi Tecson’s work for her grandmother, Tang gathers everyday items from his family home and strikes, collides, and manipulates them to generate sound. He then extends these tones into long, sustained resonances, allowing the vibrations to linger and evolve.
What emerges is not mere noise, but a deeply personal auditory narrative. Through the subtle clinks, echoes, and hums produced by these familiar objects, the artist evokes the intangible presence of his family of origin — their voices, routines, histories, and emotional imprints. Much like religious statues that become vessels for worship and spiritual nourishment, these mundane objects carry intense personal memories and become conduits for the soul.
Presented as a single-channel video installation with variable dimensions, Residual Sound explores the potential of the overlooked and the discarded. By turning the domestic environment into a resonant chamber, Tang reveals how ordinary things can hold and transmit profound emotional legacies. The lingering sounds act as traces of lived experience — fragile yet persistent — that continue to echo long after their physical sources have fallen silent.
